Karma and Karmic Contract: Is It Free Will Or Destiny?
You’ve heard of the Law of Attraction, which is great. Big fan of the Law of Attraction! But what about the Law of Karma?
Recently, between Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan, Karma is making a comeback in the conversation. But what is the Law of Karma, really?
The textbook definition is “the force generated by a person's actions, held in Hinduism and Buddhism, to perpetuate transmigration and, in its ethical consequences, to determine the nature of the person's next existence.”
Or, in normal people’s language, what goes around comes around. You reap what you sow, or cause and effect.
But wait… what about free will? What about Karmic Contracts? How do they all play into this?
The problem with the most commonly held definition of Karma is that it only describes one form of Karma. But Lady Karma works in so many ways, including in this ‘what goes around, comes around’ kind of way.
Let’s get into… what the Law of Karma is, what a Karmic Contract is, and how free will plays into the whole picture.
What Is The Law of Karma?
Everything is energy (dive deep into quantum physics sometimes—this concept gets wild). The Law of Karma is a massive energy exchange. With every action you take, you put energy out into the world.
When you put good energy and intention into your actions, you accumulate good karma that will come back to you. The same goes for actions you take that have a negative or malicious intention behind them. But not all of our decisions have a good or bad, clear-cut, black-and-white energetic exchange.
Karma also does not work on your timeline. Just because you took action doesn't mean you will get a karmic response instantly. Instant Karma is actually not that common. You could do something really good and not get your good Karma for years. When you live your life with compassion and kindness, you are more likely to have a life full of Karmic blessings.
But we know that the world doesn’t work like that 100% of the time. What happens to those really good people who have really shitty things happen to them? Why do some bad people have all these good things, and some good people do not have such good things? The answer: Karmic Contracts!
Karmic Contracts
Before you came down to Earth, you sat down with your spirit team and planned some big things out. Maybe it was some healing needed, a lesson, or resources you’d need to fulfill your life's purpose… For whatever reason, you and your team decided to have specific things laid out for you. This is part of your Karmic Contract.
You may never know the purpose of some of your life events, but certain events had to happen for you to be the person you needed to be to do the things you needed to do.
Try this thought experiment. Think of something crappy that happened to you. Now follow the thread from that event to now.
For example… What about that difficult person you married? The marriage was difficult and ended in a heartbreaking divorce. However, it brought you to a new city where you got your dream job and met your soulmate. During your marriage or divorce, you may think it was all a bunch of bad Karma. But what if that hard thing was the best thing that’s ever happened to you because of what happened later? You just didn’t know it until later. Sometimes, for one thing to happen, you have to grow through another first.
However, sometimes your Karmic Contract could be something you need to resolve from a past life. Maybe in a past life, you were a misogynist man, so in this life, you were reincarnated as a woman, so you can truly empathize and help create change for women.
A lot of your Karmic Contracts can be found in your birth chart. For example, if you have a YOD connected to your house of relationships, this could mean that you have significant Karma to work through regarding building and maintaining healthy relationships in this lifetime.

You can also have generational Karmic Contracts to fulfill, such as a cycle passed down from one generation to the next. You may be tasked with breaking the generational Karma. If you are the black sheep in your family, this might just be one of your life purposes.
Does this mean you have to fulfill your Karma? Do you have to do that work to overcome Karmic Contracts and accept that your story has already been written for you?
No! This is where free will comes in.
Karma & Free Will
You can completely ignore the signs, contracts, and events in your life. Maybe you have an opportunity to work in your dream location but you can't seem to bring yourself to leave the comfort of the city you've always known. This is your choice. That new job and new location could be a Karmic thing (uncomfy things often are), but you can choose to stay comfortable.
You have the power of your actions, your energy exchange, and how you live your life. So fulfilling your Karmic Contracts is up to you while you’re here.
Once you are done with this lifetime, you’ll meet with your spirit team again and review it. Then, maybe you decide to try again until you fulfill your Karma, but with a different approach. Maybe instead of having an opportunity to move to that new location, you are forced to move there because of extenuating circumstances.
Navigating your Karmic Contracts is hard. This plane has a lot of temptations that can easily pull us off our Karmic tracks. Money, power, and fame can become things that pull you from your true life purpose. However, for another person, fame might allow them to fulfill theirs.
There is only so much you can do to find out what your Karma is and how to address it. But here is a meditation that might help you connect with Lady Karma.
Whether you are thinking of Karma based on your actions, Karmic Contracts, or contemplating your choices in the whole thing, one thing is for sure. Karma is only a bitch if you don’t respect her.
